Unrest at USC: Protests Prompt LAPD Alert

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) issued a citywide tactical alert following days of unrest at the University of Southern California (USC) campus.

Protesters, advocating for the university to sever ties with Israel amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza, prompted heightened security measures and disruptions on campus.

Tactical Alert and Campus Disruption:

USC, in response to the unfolding situation, urged its community to avoid the University Park Campus (UPC) via a social media announcement.

While the university refrained from specifying the nature of the disruption, it coincided with the presence of pro-Palestinian encampments and demonstrations on campus.

Demonstrations and Controversial Messaging:

Protesters continued their calls for a ceasefire in Gaza, displaying signs and banners across the campus. However, the messaging, including slogans like “Jews against genocide” and “We love you, Gaza,” sparked controversy and discomfort among some students. Reports of vandalism, targeting campus property such as the fountain and the iconic statue of Tommy Trojan, further escalated tensions.

LAPD Response and Arrests:

A significant police presence descended upon the USC campus on Saturday evening, although specific reasons for the response were not disclosed by the LAPD.

This follows the arrest of nearly 100 individuals earlier in the week, as pro-Palestinian supporters defied police orders to disperse from UPC.

Impact on University Operations:

In the aftermath of the unrest, USC announced the cancellation of its main commencement ceremony and imposed restrictions on social activities on campus until further notice.

These measures underscore the gravity of the situation and the university’s efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of its community amidst escalating tensions.
