Prompted by ongoing safety concerns for riders and bus operators, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved a motion to strengthen safety measures on the transit system.
Motion Details:
The motion, introduced by Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez, directs the Los Angeles Police Department and Metro officials to provide a comprehensive report on safety statistics from 2017 to 2024, including a demographic breakdown of all victims.
The vote was 10-0, with some council members absent during decision-making.
Concerns Raised:
Rodriguez expressed frustration over unresolved safety issues, citing the recent tragic incident involving Mirna Soza Arauz, who was fatally stabbed on Metro’s B (Red) Line.
The councilwoman emphasized the need for urgent action to ensure the safety of all passengers, especially those from vulnerable communities.
Council Members’ Remarks:
Council members John Lee and Traci Park echoed Rodriguez’s concerns, highlighting the importance of addressing safety issues, particularly with the upcoming 2028 Olympics in the city.
Metro’s Response:
In response to Arauz’s death, Metro’s Board of Directors approved emergency measures, including procuring and installing plexiglass barriers on buses and implementing enhanced security measures at stations.
The Board also approved motions to analyze data on violent crimes, increase security cameras, and explore using facial credit technology to improve safety.
