Los Angeles City Council Advances Measure to Reevaluate Port Leasing Policy

On Friday, the Los Angeles City Council took a notable step forward by endorsing a recommendation to reassess the leasing policy governing properties owned by the Port of Los Angeles.

Council members approved the request with a unanimous vote of 11-0. They directed the city attorney’s office to draft amendments to evaluate the impact of proposed projects on local job opportunities, intending to incorporate these measures into the leasing policy.

Absence of Some Council Members:

Council members Paul Krekorian, Curren Price, Heather Hutt, and Bob Blumenfield were missing from the vote. Despite their absence, the measure garnered unanimous support from those present.

Councilman Tim McOsker, representing the 15th District, emphasized the importance of ensuring that the Port of Los Angeles’s leasing policy aligns with the city’s economic interests.

He stressed the need for the port to evaluate comprehensively how proposed projects and leasing agreements may affect local job opportunities.

Enhancing Accountability and Transparency:

McOsker highlighted the necessity for greater transparency and accountability in the port’s decision-making process.

By implementing measures to assess the impact on jobs associated with port operations, the proposal seeks to enhance accountability and safeguard the dignity of workers and their families.

Origin and Motivation of the Proposal:

The proposal, initiated by Councilman McOsker through a motion in December 2023, recognizes the significant role played by the Port of Los Angeles in the regional and local economy.

McOsker emphasized the need to proactively address concerns regarding potential job displacement or loss resulting from port activities.
