YouTube and Netflix Opt Out of Dedicated Apps for Apple Vision Pro

YouTube and Netflix have decided not to release dedicated apps for the upcoming Apple Vision Pro headset launch. Users must access YouTube and Netflix through the Safari web browser on the device.

YouTube stated that it supports Vision Pro by ensuring a great experience in Safari but did not provide specific reasons for opting out. It remains unclear if YouTube plans to support Vision Pro in the future.

Impact on Viewer Experience and Offline Downloads:

The absence of dedicated apps means that users cannot access YouTube’s offline downloads feature on Apple Vision Pro, impacting the convenience of watching videos, especially during travel.

YouTube’s decision is notable, considering its popularity as the world’s leading video-sharing platform. In contrast, YouTube provides an app for Meta Quest, a rival headset.

Netflix Confirms No Dedicated App; Other Companies May Follow Suit:

Netflix has also confirmed its decision not to launch a dedicated app for Vision Pro, and it will not modify its iPad version.

Other companies, including Meta-owned platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and WhatsApp, are reportedly considering staying away from launching compatible apps. Spotify is also said to have chosen not to release a new app for Vision Pro.

Developers face challenges with Apple’s App Store rules, including a 27% fee for out-of-app-store purchases.

Spotify expressed dissatisfaction with the new rules, calling the 27% fee for transactions made outside the app on a developer’s website “outrageous.” Apple automatically includes iPad apps in the Vision Pro store unless developers explicitly state their non-participation.

Companies Supporting Vision Pro Launch:

Despite some companies opting out, nearly 20 apps are set to launch entertainment experiences on Vision Pro. These include TikTok, Disney+, Max, Discovery+, Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+, Peacock, Pluto TV, Tubi, Fubo, Crunchyroll, ESPN, NBA, MLB, PGA Tour, Red Bull TV, IMAX, and MUBI.
