Legacy automakers, aiming to catch up with electric vehicle (EV) leaders like Tesla, are leveraging their Formula E electric racing teams to drive innovations for building better mass-production EVs.

While Formula E faces challenges in winning over motorsports enthusiasts, automakers emphasize that the racing series provides a testing ground for developing efficient motors, inverters, and software that enhance performance and range in consumer EVs.

Tata Motors’ Silicon Carbide Inverter Technology:

Jaguar Land Rover, a unit of Tata Motors, is investing £15 billion to boost its EV production. The company plans to apply silicon carbide inverter technology, developed for its Formula E cars, in the next generation of premium-model EVs.

Insights gained from managing battery temperatures in Formula E have already enhanced the range of Jaguar I-Pace EVs through over-the-air updates.

Nissan’s Transfer of Technology from Formula E to Mass-Market EVs:

Nissan, planning 19 fully electric models by 2026, uses technology from its Formula E team to enhance motors, inverters, and battery packs for mass-market EVs.

Initially based on the Nissan Leafs, the racing car’s software serves as a foundation. The goal is to transfer advancements from Formula E to improve efficiency in consumer EVs while ensuring affordability.

Porsche’s Dual Impact of Formula E on Luxury EVs and Talent Pool:

Porsche sees Formula E as a source of technological advancements for luxury EVs and talent.

The automaker has reassigned top engineers from its Formula E program to road models, emphasizing the dual impact of the racing series in shaping both technology and personnel for the electric future.
