Google CEO Sundar Pichai Warns of More Layoffs in 2024

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has informed the company’s staff through a memo that more layoffs are expected in 2024 as the tech giant works to meet its ambitious goals.

Pichai acknowledged the difficulty of such decisions and mentioned that while the layoffs won’t be on the scale of the 2023 cuts, tough choices will be made to align resources with strategic priorities.

Last week, Google laid off over 1,000 employees across multiple divisions, and additional layoffs affected 100 YouTube staffers as part of a reorganization.

Ambitious Goals and Tough Choices:

Pichai emphasized the need for “tough choices” to achieve the company’s ambitious goals in the memo.

He stated that the forthcoming layoffs won’t match the scale of the 2023 reductions but acknowledged the challenges of witnessing colleagues and teams being impacted.

Pichai noted that many of the changes have already been announced, and while some teams have made resource allocation decisions, additional role eliminations may occur throughout the year.

Recent Layoffs and Reorganization:

Last week’s layoffs affected various teams, including hardware, engineering, ads, and services, with more than 1,000 employees laid off.

Fitbit co-founders James Park and Eric Friedman also left the organization during this period. Additionally, Google laid off 100 YouTube staffers as part of a reorganization.

The company highlighted the need for efficiency and alignment with product priorities as drivers for organizational changes.
