Turmoil at Los Angeles Times as Union Members Stage Historic Strike

Approximately 400 members of the Los Angeles Times’ union, representing newsroom staff, writers, and photographers, initiated a one-day strike, marking the first action in the newspaper’s 142-year history.

The strike follows the recent resignation of executive editor Kevin Merida, adding to the upheaval.

Demands Amid Layoff Threats:

The strike was triggered by management’s announcement of impending journalist layoffs, estimated to be around 20%.

The union, in response, demanded no cuts but insisted on reasonable buyout options if reductions were inevitable. Last year, 74 newsroom positions were eliminated due to declining advertising revenue.

Accusing L.A. Times management of unfair labor practices, the union contends that the proposed cuts would severely impact the newsroom, impairing the paper’s ability to cover local and national events, especially during a crucial election year.

Ownership and Recent Changes:

The Los Angeles Times, purchased nearly six years ago by local billionaire Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, has undergone significant changes.

The strike reflects the discontent among employees over potential downsizing after efforts to strengthen the paper.

Union members express gratitude for the investments made by the owner in building up the newspaper but emphasize that this is not the time to make cuts. Their key demand is fair and reasonable buyouts, should reductions be necessary.

Management’s Response:

L.A. Times management expressed disappointment in the Guild’s decision to strike in a statement but acknowledged and respected the union’s right to do so.

The statement emphasized the newspaper’s longstanding publishing history and its commitment to continue despite the challenges.
