Former Portland Public Schools Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero has been selected as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the nonprofit Partnership for Los Angeles Schools.

The organization, launched by former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa in 2007, manages schools within the LA Unified district, primarily serving Black and Latino students.

Return to California Roots and New Leadership Role:

Guerrero’s new role represents a return to his California roots and a significant change from his tenure in Portland.

The Partnership for Los Angeles Schools oversees a network of 20 schools attended by more than 13,000 students, focusing on educational equity for Black and Latino students.

Achievements and Challenges in Portland:

During his 6½ years as superintendent in Portland, Guerrero focused on updating and standardizing curriculum districtwide, expanding access to arts and career and technical education, allocating more funds to schools with higher populations of high-needs students, and improving graduation rates.

However, challenges remained, including disparities in literacy and math proficiency rates, especially for Black and Pacific Islander students post-pandemic.

Change in Leadership and Upcoming Transition:

Guerrero announced his resignation in December 2022, and Sandy Husk, a former Salem-Keizer superintendent, will serve as interim superintendent in Portland while the school board searches for a permanent replacement.

Guerrero is expected to start his role as CEO of the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools in April.
