A fatal shooting outside the Los Cerritos Center in Cerritos, California, on Friday afternoon, has left one suspect dead and prompted a lockdown of stores within the mall.
The incident, involving an exchange of gunfire between a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer and three suspects, has sparked chaos and raised questions about the circumstances leading up to the confrontation.
Details of the Shooting:
The shooting occurred around 4 p.m. in the parking lot of the Los Cerritos Center. While the exact series of events leading to the gunfire remains unclear, eyewitnesses reported an exchange of gunfire between an officer and the suspects, who were traveling in a Dodge Charger. A video clip shared on social media captured the chaos as shoppers scrambled amid the unfolding situation.
The shooting prompted a lockdown of stores within the mall, with establishments like Macy’s implementing safety measures to protect patrons and employees. Nordstrom closed early in response to the incident, underscoring the disruption caused by the shooting.
Suspects and Response:
One suspect was injured during the exchange of gunfire and subsequently transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The remaining two suspects fled the scene, leading to a pursuit on the 605 Freeway. Law enforcement later apprehended the suspects near Telegraph Road following another confrontation initially thought to involve gunfire.
