Michelin Guide Expands California Selection with 10 New Restaurants

The Michelin Guide recently unveiled 10 new additions to its California guide, signaling recognition for outstanding culinary experiences across Los Angeles and San Francisco.

These selections, curated by Michelin inspectors, showcase diverse dining options, from family-run eateries to upscale establishments, hinting at potential stars or Bib Gourmands in upcoming ceremonies.

New Additions in Los Angeles:

Los Angeles dominates this year’s additions with a rich tapestry of culinary delights. From the affordable and beloved Peruvian chicken spot Pollo a la Brasa to Evan Funke’s refined pasta haven, Funke, the city’s dining scene reflects a blend of flavors and cultures.

Notable mentions include Echo Park’s Quarter Sheets, a gem recognized for excellence, and Liu’s Cafe, an authentic Chinese-American eatery in Koreatown.

The guide also embraces Japanese cuisine with additions like Sawa, Sushi Sonagi, and Uka, alongside the sophisticated French restaurant, Amour, in West Hollywood.

Representation Challenges and Geographic Focus:

Despite showcasing diverse dining options, Michelin’s selections still predominantly cluster around the central Los Angeles area, with notable exceptions like Sushi Sonagi in Gardena.

This geographic concentration reflects historic challenges in comprehensively representing the sprawling expanse of Los Angeles’s culinary landscape.

Previous Recognition and Future Potential:

While Michelin’s past ceremonies have acknowledged culinary excellence in Los Angeles, last year’s event saw only one new star awarded to Heritage in Long Beach, with no two- or three-star restaurants added.

The recent additions to the guide offer hope for further recognition and acclaim, potentially elevating these establishments to coveted star status in future ceremonies.
