Two individuals lost their lives on Thursday following a devastating collision in Jefferson Park, as a suspected DUI driver, traveling at speeds exceeding 100 mph, clipped a UPS truck before veering into oncoming traffic.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) provided points of the incident near Arlington Avenue and W. 29th Street around noon.

The crash unfolded when the driver of a black BMW, headed southbound on Arlington Avenue, disregarded a red light, resulting in a collision with a UPS truck. The impact forced the BMW off course, causing it to collide with parked vehicles in the vicinity.

Efforts to Apprehend the Suspect:

The driver of the BMW tried to flee the scene but was apprehended by witnesses who pursued him. LAPD Detective Ryan Moreno commended the actions of these individuals, highlighting their efforts in aiding law enforcement.

Tragically, two occupants of the BMW, identified as a woman in the front passenger seat and a man in the backseat, lost their lives in the accident.

LAPD described the victims as being in their late teens to early 20s. Additionally, the driver of the UPS truck sustained minor injuries while unloading packages at the time of the collision.

Suspected DUI and Subsequent Arrest:

Law enforcement indicated that drugs or alcohol likely played a role in the crash. Upon inspecting the BMW, authorities discovered a nitrous oxide tank, suggesting the driver may have inhaled the substance while operating the vehicle.

The driver, whose identity remains undisclosed, was arrested and hauled to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
