Huawei Technologies and U.S. tech giant Amazon have reached a multi-year patent licensing agreement, marking a significant step in resolving litigation between the two companies.
Resolution of Litigation:
The deal includes a resolution of ongoing lawsuits between Huawei and Amazon, particularly in Germany, related to patented technology concerning wifi and video playback.
While specific terms of the deal were not disclosed, Alan Fan, head of Huawei’s intellectual property rights department, confirmed the conclusion of litigation against Amazon.
Background of Tensions:
Tensions between the United States and Chinese telecom companies, including Huawei, have escalated recently. Concerns about data security led to the U.S. barring Chinese firms from its market and designating Huawei and ZTE as threats, removing their equipment from U.S. networks.
Additionally, U.S. restrictions on-chip and component supplies have adversely impacted Huawei’s smartphone business.
Cooperation Despite Challenges:
Despite geopolitical tensions, the patent licensing agreement highlights the willingness of American and Chinese companies, as well as those from other regions, to collaborate on standards and patent licensing without limitations, according to Alan Fan.
Cross-Licensing Patent Deal with Vivo:
In addition to the agreement with Amazon, Huawei announced a cross-licensing patent deal with domestic smartphone maker Vivo.
The agreement covers communication technologies, including 5G, further underscoring Huawei’s commitment to cooperation within the industry. Similar patent agreements have been established with other Chinese smartphone manufacturers like Xiaomi and Oppo.
