Ford Recalls 2.24 Million Older Explorer SUVs Globally

Ford Motor announced a global recall of 2.24 million older Explorer sport utility vehicles (SUVs) due to concerns over trim retention clips.

The recall, affecting 2011 through 2019 model year vehicles, includes 1.89 million SUVs in the United States.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) highlighted the risk of trim detachment in the A-pillar area.

Inspection and Replacement of A-Pillar Trim:

The recall addresses the possibility of the A-pillar trim not being properly engaged, leading to potential detachment. Ford plans to inspect and replace the A-pillar trim as necessary.

The A-pillar, which supports the windshield, has been identified as an area of concern. Ford ceased using the part in 2019.

Lack of Reported Crashes or Injuries:

Ford stated that it is not aware of any reported crashes or injuries associated with the trim retention issue.

The recall aims to address the risk of trim detachment, which may result in gaps around the A-pillar trim, audible rattles, or excessive wind noise from the A-pillar area.

NHTSA’s Inquiries and Ford’s Response Timeline:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration initiated an informal inquiry in 2018 related to the detachment of exterior A-pillar trim parts on 2012-2014 Explorer vehicles.

In 2018, Ford determined that the issue did not pose an unreasonable risk to safety. In 2021, a review of the matter was reopened, and no recall was deemed necessary. In February 2023, NHTSA launched a preliminary investigation, leading to the current recall.

Safety Hazard and Previous Warranty Reports:

NHTSA informed Ford that the trim detachment while driving posed a road safety hazard to other vehicles. Ford acknowledged 14,337 warranty reports alleging missing or detached exterior A-pillar trim parts.
